MC:P285 List of Magdalen Blues
These papers consist of a list of Magdalen members who represented the university against Cambridge in various sports between the years 1836-1925. The list was compiled by George B. Routledge, who also wrote the letter in the collection. Routledge appears to have made a complete list of all Oxford students who competed against Cambridge. From this master list he then drew up smaller ones focussing on individual colleges.
Little is now known about Routledge. He appears to have been an antiquary with an interest in Oxford’s sporting history.
The College acquired the list in 1925, when Routledge sent a copy to Magdalen, amongst other colleges. (See the letter, MC:P285/C1/1, for further details). He sent out copies of the list in order that the colleges could benefit from his years of research. At some point the list was classified as MS 857, now reclassified to MC:P285.
Catalogued by Emma Burgham in October 2006.
MC:P285/C1 – CORRESPONDENCE
MC:P285/C1/1 1 Dec. 1925
Letter from Routledge to an unidentified recipient. Routledge speaks a little about the work of compiling the list, mentions some names that should be added, and expresses his wish that his work be available to others.
MC:P285/X1 – SPORT EPHEMERA
List of Magdalen members who represented Oxford against Cambridge in various sports between the years 1836-1925. The list is hand-written on numbered sheets of foolscap paper, and runs to thirty pages. It is arranged (with some exceptions) alphabetically by sport. For each sport Routledge then worked chronologically, listing dates and individual events (e.g. the high jump in Athletics), the name of the man who competed, his school, and sometimes a result. He also often recorded the position that a man held in a team, crew or club. He recorded other information, such as recipients of Rhodes scholarships, or if a particular contest was suspended during the First World War. The final page records the names of ‘Blues not identified.’
