MC:P448 Papers and Miscellany of Jack Francis Blitz (D. 1940-2, 45-46)
The essays and notes in this collection were written by Jack Francis Blitz from his time at Portsmouth Boys’ Southern Secondary School, throughout the duration of his undergraduate and postgraduate study at Magdalen, and then through his BSc degrees in London, as well as some references to his employment up until 1956.
Jack Francis Blitz was born 24 October 1921 and, after attending Portsmouth Boys’ Southern Secondary School, became an undergraduate reading Physics at Magdalen. Blitz was a Demy from 1940-42 and 1945-6 and was awarded an MA in 1947. Blitz’s war service included serving in the Department of Scientific Research for the Royal Navy (1942) and as Departmental Scientific Adviser to Chief of Combined Operations (1945). Blitz attained a BSc and BSc in Economics (both in London) in 1941 and 1949 respectively. Blitz published numerous books and articles and ultimately had a career in the confectionery business. He died 10 May 2001 at the age of 79.
The essays and notes within the collection concern a wide range of subjects including mathematics, physics, chemistry, economics, geography, history, and languages (Italian and German). The majority of the notes pertains to mathematics and science (physics especially).
The collection also includes photographs, prints, and memorabilia pertaining to Blitz’s time at Magdalen.
This collection was donated to the College by the family of J.F. Blitz in January 2015 and given Accession No. 15/4.
