MC:P174 Papers of Terence Hodgkinson
Terence William Ivan Hodgkinson (1913–99) attended Oundle (where he was at Crosby House), before coming to Magdalen as a Commoner in 1931–5, where he read PPE, getting a Second. His father, Ivan Tattersall Hodgkinson (1891–1931), had himself been at Magdalen in 1910–11, as had other members of his family. His family once owned the Wookey Hole caves in Somerset, and ran a paper mill there. His family certainly had the means to have a family trust, from which Hodgkinson himself benefited. In the late 1930s, Hogkinson met and fell in love with Hans Schneider, a Jewish refugee from Vienna, who later worked for Marks and Spencer, eventually becoming head of design and technology there. They remained lifelong partners until Schneider’s death in 1995.
On graduating, Hodgkinson’s interests turned towards the history of art. After the war (during which he worked in military intelligence) he enjoyed an eminent career working in museums. He became an Assistant Keeper in the Department of Architecture and Sculpture at the Victoria and Albert Museum, where he remained until 1974, rising to become Assistant to the Director in 1948–62 and then Keeper of the Architecture and Sculpture department 1967–74. From 1974–8 he was Director of the Wallace Collection, and he edited the Burlington Magazine in 1978–81. In 1981–9 he served on the Museums and Galleries Commission. More information on his life can be found on his entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
Many of these papers relate to Hodgkinson’s time at Magdalen College, especially a series of diaries which describe his daily life at Oxford in considerable detail, but there are a few papers from later in his life, most notably some letters to him and Schneider from Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears, and some items reflecting their friendship with several Russian ballet dancers.
The first deposit of papers were given to the archives of Magdalen College by Hodgkinson’s executor Mr. Jock Palmer in June 2001 as Accession No. 01/125. Further deposits were made by him in February 2002, April and June 2004, and July 2006 respectively as Accession nos. 02/49, 04/88, 04/125, and 06/98.
