MC:P424/X7 – John Brooke’s Memoir
This series has a different provenance to the rest of MC:P424. Rather than originating with Harold Boult, it was given to the Archives by the Archivist at Magdalen College School in Oxford, who in turn had been contacted by a former chorister, John Brooke. Having seen the photograph catalogued here at MC:P424/P1/1, Brooke was able to identify several previously unknown individuals, and also offered his own memories of the day. The identities of the choristers who Brooke recognised are stated in the catalogue for MC:P424/P1/1. These papers are catalogued here due to their close relationship with items in this fonds.
MC:P424/X7/1 December 2014
Short (just over 1 page) memoir by John Brooke (Chorister 1953-6) of a trip in early summer 1954, when Magdalen College Choir went to Westminster Abbey to sing in a choral evensong with the Abbey’s own choir and choirs from New College and Christ Church. During a break in the journey from Oxford to the Abbey, the photograph catalogued at MC:P424/P1/1 was taken.
MC:P424/X7/2 December 2014
Facsimile of MC:P424/P1/1 with annotations by John Brooke (Chorister 1953-6) identifying several of the choristers and College employees in the photograph, as follows: Philip Taylor (O. 1942-57); the Dean of Divinity Arthur Adams (DD. 1949-75); and the choristers N.M.D. Brown, Andrew Hutchcroft, and R.M. Pryce. He also gives the date and place of the photograph as “Picnic somewhere on the A40 between Oxford and London, Early Summer 1954”.
