MC:P430 Papers relating to Joseph W. Gynes (JCR Steward 1914-31)
Joseph Gynes was a long-standing servant of Magdalen College. He began his employment in 1888 and served for over forty years. He retired in 1931 as the Steward of the JCR, having held that post for seventeen years. As his autograph book (MC:P430/X3) makes clear, several generations of students knew him as a ‘Monitor & Friend’. The bulk of these papers consists of 149 dinner menus collected by Gynes during his time as JCR Steward. Many of these are signed by those present at the dinner – some guests also left jocular comments or drew sketches for Gynes. Among those whose signatures appear are the poet John Betjeman (MC:P430/X1/113) and the Conservative MPs Sir (Henry) Paul Latham (MC:P430/X1/83) and Sir Douglas Dodds-Parker (MC:P430/X1/124, 138 & 139).
The documents catalogued under MC:P430/X2 were donated to the archives by one G.G.J. Goodes in 1984; Goodes having found them among Gynes’ papers. The remainder of the collection was deposited in the archives at various unknown dates.
The collection has been catalogued into the following series:
