MC:PR33/1/7C Letter from Powell
MC:PR33/1/7C/1 24 Aug 1939
Three-page letter on typed, headed notepaper from Powell (first name unknown; address, Ramsay Hotel, Island of Ramsay, by Kyle of Lochalsh) to Gordon on the subject of the sculptor Nollekens, particularly with regard to a bust of Dr. Johnson in an abbey (presumably on the island). Powell mentions other busts created by Nollekens for Royal Academy exhibitions, and mentions the fact that Johnson’s bust is titled that ‘of a gentlemen’ in accordance to the tradition of the time (18th Century), rather than out of any disrespect. Powell ends with a note regarding world affairs at the time (just before the outbreak of World War II on Sept 3rd, 1939).
