MC:F39 Papers of John Knight Fotheringham (Fellow 1909-16)
John Knight Fotheringham (1874–1936) read Classics and History at Merton College before coming to Magdalen College as a Senior Demy 1898–1902. After spending time as a classics lecturer at King’s College London, he returned to Magdalen as a Research Fellow in 1909–16. During this time he changed his research interests from classics and history to astronomy. After his Fellowship at Magdalen lapsed, he was appointed assistant at the Oxford University observatory in 1918, and then in 1925, a readership in ancient history and chronology was specially created for him at Oxford, a post which he held until his death in 1936.
The only document relating to Fotheringham in the archives of Magdalen College is a collection of testimonials relating to an unsuccessful bid to become Savilian Professor of Astronomy in 1931. It is not known when or how this document came to the archives.
Recatalogued in June 2011.
Printed letter of application and testimonials submitted by John Fotheringham for the office of Savilian Professor of Astronomy. He was unsuccessful in his bid.
