MC:P2/5 Dodds-Parker’s term as MP. for Banbury, 1945–1959
Dodds-Parker was elected Conservative MP for Banbury in the 1945 General Election, and held his seat in the next three elections until he stood down in 1959. Much of his book Political Eunuch is devoted to an account of these years, which included his only period as member of the Government, when from November 1953–October 1954 he was Joint Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, and then in October 1954–December 1955 and December 1955–January 1957 he was Parliamentary Under-Secretary respectively for Commonwealth Relations and Foreign Affairs. Among his more notable engagements at this time were a visit to Canada in the autumn of 1955, and his representing Great Britain at the Independence celebrations of the Sudan in 1956.
Dodds-Parker’s second term in the Foreign Office coincided with the Suez crisis. Pages 98–122 of Political Eunuch give an account of his experiences of that time, during which he felt himself duty bound to defend the Government’s policy, for all his own private reservations on the matter. Despite this loyalty, however, he was not retained as a member of the Government when Harold Macmillan replaced Sir Anthony Eden as Prime Minister in January 1957.
The papers in this section include material relating to local constituency business and to his time in government, and more general papers on his time in Parliament. Note too MC:P2/15/1J/14–26 for Dodds-Parker’s engagement diaries from this period.
