The papers in this section of the catalogue originated from Lord Alfred Douglas’s wife, Olive (1872-1944). As explained above, it is presume that they came to Douglas on his wife’s death. Letter from ‘Paul’ (address, 23 Avenue du Bois de Boulogne) to an unnamed addressee, who is a poet, expressing appreciation of the addressee’s poems, and passionate love for the actual addressee. The fact that the writer compares the addressee to Sappho shows that this letter was written to Olive Custance. [‘Paul’ was the poet Pauline Tarn, who wrote under the pseudonym Renée Vivien.]

Letter from ‘Baby’ (address, Fairlawn, Woodhall Spa) to Olive Custance, congratulating her on her engagement. A note with the letter identified the addressee as Custance [“Baby” is possibly to be identified with “Baby”Hohenlohe, a friend of Natalie Clifford-Barney].
