MC:F33/1/C3 Correspondence relating to Visit of G. Bernard Shaw to Magdalen College
In February 1892 George Bernard Shaw visited Magdalen College as a guest of the Four-in-Hand debating club to discuss socialism. Several members of the JCR were incensed by what they saw as a socialist infiltrating Magdalen and so laid siege to the room in which Bernard Shaw was given his talk, barricading the door with furniture and hurling missiles through the windows. Bernard Shaw was eventually hounded out of the college by the irate students and a college servant and Junior Dean were assaulted in the fracas. The disturbance led to the gating of a number of junior members as well as an amusing letter written by Bernard Shaw to the Pall Mall Gazette on the events.
Benecke evidently became interested in the events which would have taken place shortly after he became a fellow of the college. This series consists mainly of correspondence with the individuals involved. For more information see J. Cottis: ‘A Fabian at Magdalen: George Bernard Shaw’s visit of 1892’ in Magdalen College Record, (1992) pp.69-73.
