MC:F33/1 Papers given by P.V.M. Benecke
This group brings together documents from five collections which had left to the college by Paul Victor Mendelssohn Benecke.
They contain Benecke’s academic notes and papers (MS1-MS5), which have been divided roughly into notes on Classical and Theological topics, College History and Miscellaneous notes. There are also a number of notebooks used by Benecke as lecture notes for lectures given in Classics. Finally, there is a collection of academic ephemera – exam papers, scholarship charts etc. The papers are somewhat jumbled as Benecke was not renowned for his organisation. They would, however, be of interest to a researcher into the workings of an Oxford academic.
There is also a small amount of the correspondence of Benecke, as well as two collections of papers concerned with the ‘Magdalen Vagabonds’ madrigal group (C1, MS6-MS7) with many photographs of the members of the group. Finally, there is a collection of letters referring to the visit of George Bernard Shaw to Magdalen in 1892.
