The Sherrington Society
The Sherrington Society is a University-wide society based at Magdalen College. Its origins stretch back to the start of the last century making it one of College's most historic Societies.
Sir Charles Sherrington, awarded the Nobel Prize in 1932 for his contributions to medicine, was Waynflete Professor of Physiology at Magdalen College and one of the world's most distinguished scientists. Following in his tradition, we provide a forum for thought provoking debate on topical medical and life-science issues. Since its foundation we have hosted some of the greatest scientists in the country. Recent guests include Professor Dame Sally Davies (the Government's Chief Medical Officer), Professor David Nutt, Professor Sir John Bell and Lord Robert Winston.
We regularly invite distinguished speakers from a wide range of fields in medicine and its related fields of biochemistry, human sciences, biology and public health. Students of these subjects will receive details of our termly events, although the Society is open to everyone. We also arrange social functions for medical students and the highlight of the year is undoubtedly our Annual Dinner, now achieving legendary status!
The Sherrington Society is grateful to the British Pharmacological Society (http://www.bps.ac.uk) for its generous financial support of the 2010/11 programme of events.
