20th February 2018
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Waynflete Fellow and Former Chairman of the Magdalen College Development Trust, John Clay (1948). The College flag will be flying at half-mast in his memory.
“He always treasured his connection with Magdalen,” said Hugh (1980), his son. “He was delighted when I followed him and rowed for the College and OUBC.”
John’s lifelong passion outside his work was sailing, which he pursued at Oxford, sailing in the University team in term time and with his tutor John Morris in the summer holidays.
After some years spent in a nursing home, John was taken ill last week and died peacefully on Sunday 18 February.
John’s family will be holding a celebration of his life at 3pm on Monday 16 April in the Auditorium. All are welcome.
If you would like to attend this event please contact the family via the John Clay memorial website or contact John’s sons directly.
