Making a Gift

We are very grateful for any level of support, and gifts to the College can be arranged in a number of ways.

Your gift can be allocated to a particular fundraising campaign or to an Annual Fund project of your choice. If you choose not to specify a project, then your donation will give the college ultimate flexibility in allocating your gift to the area of greatest need.

Gift Aid

Donations from UK Taxpayers benefit from the government’s Gift Aid Scheme. For every £1 donated, the College can claim 25 pence of tax at no additional cost to you. Thus a gift of £100 is worth £125 to Magdalen.

The table below illustrates the benefit of the Government’s gift aid scheme and how your gift can spread over several years:

Higher rate tax payers can also benefit from tax relief by claiming back the difference between the higher rates of tax at 40 or 50 per cent and the basic rate of tax at 20 per cent on the total value of their gross donation. For further information please see the Government page on Gift Aid.

Single and Regular Gifts

Single and regular gifts can be made by standing order, by cheque (payable to Magdalen College, Oxford), by credit or debit card, or by direct debit. The College can also accept gifts of shares and of real property.

Unless you are making a gift by direct debit or credit/debit card online, we would be grateful if you could fill in the appropriate donation form and return it to the Development Office with your gift.

It is also possible to make a donation (with Gift Aid) online using Oxford University's Online Giving web page.

If you require any assistance in making a gift to Magdalen then please do contact the Development Office.

Stocks and Shares

Since April 2000 gifts of shares are free of Capital Gains Tax on accumulated value, and the donor may set the full value against his or her Income Tax liability, thereby gaining a double advantage. We have a simple form and cost-free procedure for such transfers, and please contact the Development Office for more information about this.

Legacies

Alumni who remember Magdalen in their wills join a centuries-old lineage of Benefactors who have chosen to make this most personal of gifts in order to help the next generations, and by doing so have enabled Magdalen to flourish. Independent legal advice is essential in ensuring a legacy is made in the most appropriate and tax-effective way. Legacies made to Magdalen are exempt from Inheritance Tax in the UK. Legacies are simple to put into effect by adding a codicil or making a revision to your will. All those who make a bequest to the College are invited to join the Fastolf Society.

If you wish to include Magdalen in your charitable giving, or as a beneficiary in your will, please contact the Development Office or print out and complete the appropriate gift form below.

Gift Forms

Please print out these forms and return them to the Development Office, or consider giving online. We ask that alumni do not send completed gift forms to us through email, as this is insecure and may compromise your bank details.
