Mathematics
In addition to Mathematics itself we are interested in candidates for Maths and Philosophy, Maths and Statistics, and Maths and Computer Science (for which see under Computer Science). Although Maths and Philosophy is a small subject within the University, our tutors in both subjects are keen to encourage it, and the College has always had a steady number of students studying for this joint course.
We have 4 new Mathematics students arriving in October as well as 1 to read Mathematics and Statistics and 2 to read Mathematics and Computer Science. We plan to continue with an intake of around 6 per year if applicants of suitable quality present themselves.
Tuition
Tutorials in Mathematics are given by Alison Etheridge, who specialises in stochastic analysis, Jan Kristensen whose research is in analysis, and David Cox who also works in a local school.
Entry procedures and requirements
Candidates are required to sit the Aptitude Test for Mathematics, normally at their own school, college, or an approved test centre, on 7 November 2012. This will consist of questions which call upon core knowledge (from C1, C2 modules) that is common to all syllabuses in A-level mathematics. Further details of the test can be found on the departmental website: www.maths.ox.ac.uk.
Candidates are expected to solve problems during their interviews. We do not require samples of candidates’ school work.
Most candidates will be taking two Mathematics A-levels, and we look for two A* grades at A2. The other subject(s) are much less important. However, candidates taking only one Mathematics A-level should have another Mathematics related subject, such as Physics or Computing. We are happy to consider Scottish Advanced Highers, the International Baccalaureate or equivalent academic qualifications if the overall mathematical content is similar to that described above.
Rather few of our candidates ask for deferred entry. We normally cannot consider it for the joint courses in Maths and Philosophy, and Maths and Computer Science.
All potential applicants are encouraged to attend our Open Days. For those who find this impossible we are happy to arrange individual meetings at other times.
