Fine Art

Like most other colleges, Magdalen takes only one Fine Art undergraduate each year. However, a college so conveniently near to the main building of the Ruskin School of Drawing attracts a considerable number of candidates. There is no in-college tuition for this subject, which all takes place at the Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art, but there are two college tutors who look after the Fine Art undergraduates’ interests, both academic and social. Magdalen also provides some extra studio space for its students in the form of a small summerhouse on the banks of the River Cherwell as well as a grant for the purchase of art materials.

All candidates must follow the standard application procedures as shown on the University of Oxford website. All candidates must also submit a portfolio to the Ruskin School by the date stated on the University of Oxford website. The portfolio is crucial to the admissions process.

In mid–late November we receive a list from the Ruskin School of the candidates it wishes to consider on the basis of the portfolios submitted. These applicants are then invited to come to Magdalen for interview. Interviews are held at both the Ruskin School and at Magdalen. Those candidates not short-listed will need to make arrangements for the collection of their portfolios from the Ruskin School.

Prospective candidates are warmly invited to attend one of the College's Open Days, which correspond with Open Days at the Ruskin School. For further information on Fine Art admissions please see
