Accommodation

Introduction

A typical Magdalen student roomMagdalen College offers some of the best accommodation available in Oxford and at prices which compare very favourably with the level of rental at other Colleges. The College's housing stock includes over 500 single rooms. All undergraduates are guaranteed single College accommodation throughout their degree. Graduates are guaranteed housing in their first two years (clinical medical students will be housed in the first and third years), provided they have requested it by 1 June in their year of entry, following receipt of confirmation of their place. All students who wish to occupy College accommodation will be required to sign a 'Licence to Occupy' before keys will be issued for the room or flat. Undergraduate rooms are all the same price (see Fees & Finance), graduate rooms are graded according to size and amenity (see Fees & Costs).

Where will you live?

In practice Fresher Undergraduates are accommodated either in the Waynflete Building (located just across the River Cherwell) or in High Street properties. Second and Third Year Undergraduates mainly reside "Inside-Walls" - for example in Grove Buildings, New Building, Cloisters Attic, St Swithun's Quad, Longwall Quad and Chaplain's Quad. Graduates live "Outside Walls" in the new and modernised complex at Holywell Ford, in 1 Rose Lane, Cowley Place, the Daubeny Building and other High Street or Longwall Street properties.

Ethernet

Every College room has an Ethernet connection, whether inside the walls or outside. This means that you will have a very quick connection to the Internet. In addition, all of the computer rooms are well equipped.

Magdalen College is predominantly a collection of ancient, listed buildings and features accommodation built around staircases rather than corridors. Our limited stock of adapted accommodation is popular and there are few accessible ground floor bedrooms in close proximity to bathroom and kitchen facilities. Therefore, prospective students with specialised accommodation needs are advised to contact the Home Bursar or Tutor for Admissions before making an application. Due to student demand for rooms, Magdalen cannot at present provide additional accommodation for a carer.

The College has a lift to the dining hall. It has a capacity of 630kg or 5 persons. The Grove Auditorium provides access to the main seating area without recourse to steps and contains an accessible toilet. An induction loop amplification system is available for those equipped with an appropriate hearing aid.

Undergraduate Accommodation for Students with a Disability: Grove Buildings contains a spacious disabled suite with en-suite toilet and shower. There is level access to a kitchen on the ground floor. All student rooms in Grove Building have en-suite showers and toilets. 1-7 Longwall Street contains 2 rooms with accessible en-suite bathrooms. The building also has an accessible kitchen and launderette. However, crossing such a busy street in a wheelchair could be dangerous given the width of the pavement and the camber of the entrance and exits.

Graduate Accommodation for Students with a Disability: The only disabled bathroom at Holywell Ford is not en-suite but is adjacent to a relatively large ground floor student room which could be used by a graduate with limited mobility. There is a ground floor kitchen in that staircase and an accessible launderette nearby.
